Flowerpot Island is an island in Lake Huron just
offshore from the Bruce Peninsula. The island's claim to fame are the rock
formations known as "flowerpots". These are tall rock formations that are
narrow at the bottom and grow in diameter near the top. The island can be
reached by tour boats from Tobermory.
I hope you enjoy my photos of Flowerpot Island in Ontario, Canada.

Flowerpot Island can be reached by glass-bottomed tour boats
departing from Tobermory throughout the summer. The trip includes a detour to
a harbor in Tobermory where there are a couple of sunken boats clearly visible
from the surface through the clear water of Lake Huron.
|
There are two "flowerpots" on Flowerpot
Island. As you can see in the photo, the flowerpots are essentially tall
stands of stone that are gradually eroding at the bottom. The smaller of the
two flowerpots is no longer purely natural. It has been reinforced with
mortared stones at its base. So much for preserving the natural environment.
|
The tour boats make several roundtrips to Flowerpot
Island each day. The cost is approximately $16Cdn per adult. There is an
additional $4 charge to depart the boat at the island and return later to
Tobermory.
|
The Ontario Park Service also charges a daily use fee
of about $4Cdn per adult to visit Flowerpot Island.
|
From the dock at Flowerpot Island, the flowerpots are
about a half mile walk. The entire island loop hike is about 2 miles long,
about half of which is near shore and the other half on the interior of the
island. A second, shorter hiking trail also exists on the island.
